Dear Tim Day

Access to information – Request No RFI 5499

Thank you for your request for the information detailed below which we received on 17 March 2021.
Your request has been considered under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

You requested the following information and our response has been provided below:

1.  Please provide me with a breakdown of badgers killed during the [Derbyshire]
cull by locality. “Local Area” preferably will be a Parish area, if that level of
detail is unavailable then please provide me with the local authority area. If
neither are available please provide me with the local information that you do
hold.

Natural England does not collect information on the number of badgers culled on a parish or
local authority level. The geographic dataset for badger control licences does not capture
this information. Therefore, EIR Regulation 12(4)(a) – information not held, applies. The
number of animals dispatched by the two different licensed methods (controlled shooting
and cage trapping and dispatch) across the whole area has been published and can be
viewed here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/bovine-tb-summary-of-badger-control-monitoring-during-
2020

2.  Please provide me with the number of badgers collected for disposal from
each of the [Derbyshire cull] storage sites along with the approximate location
of that site. To clarify, I define a cull storage site as a location where licenced
shooters and/or trappers drop off the badgers they have killed during the cull
for disposal.

Natural England does not collect information on how many badgers are deposited at each
storage site across licensed areas. Therefore, EIR Regulation 12(4)(a) – information not
held, applies. This is an operation matter for individual licensed companies and they are not
required to report to Natural England or any other government department on this detail.

Please note that the information we have supplied to you is subject to copyright protection under
the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988. You may re-use this information (not including logos)
free of charge in any format or medium, for the purposes of research for non-commercial purposes,
private study, criticism, review and news reporting. You must re-use it accurately and not in a
misleading context. The material must be acknowledged as Natural England copyright and you
must give the title of the source document/publication. However, if you wish to re-use all or part of
this information for commercial purposes, including publishing and the information is not covered
by the Open Government Licence you will need to apply for a licence. Applications can be sent to
Enquiry Service, Natural England, County Hall, Spetchley Road, WORCESTER, WR5 2NP.
