Freedom of Information request – RFI20200243
Thank you for your request to the BBC of 12 February 2020 seeking the following
information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (‘the Act’):
“I am interested to know about the production and launch of BritBox, both in the US and
here, in the UK.
Specifically I am interested to know how much of the production and launch costs came from
money provided by the UK TV Licence payers.”
We have interpreted your request to refer to BritBox UK. BritBox is a joint commercial
venture between ITV and the BBC. ITV will own 90% of the new BritBox service and the
BBC's initial 10% stake could rise to 25% in the future. The BBC’s 10% stake is held by BBC
Commercial Holdings.
As set out in section 6(1)(b)(ii) of the Act, our subsidiaries (including BBC Studioworks
Limited, UKTV, BBC Global News Ltd and BBC Studios Ltd), as well as the charities BBC
Media Action and BBC Children in Need, are not subject to the Act. Therefore information
regarding their activities is also not subject to the Act.
