Hilbre Island cave fire
Dear Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service,
Further to the recent fire in a cave on Hilbre Island, is it possible that the fire could have started spontaneously caused by the exothermic reaction of the compounds used to make PU foam especially because its application was conducted in a confined space?
Yours faithfully,
John H Hutchinson

Dear Crimmins, Jean,
I am advised by a manufacturer of PU foam that there is insufficient heat generated by the chemical reaction to cause spontaneous combustion.
I shall be grateful for your response, please?
Yours sincerely,
John H Hutchinson

Dear Mr Hutchinson,
Thank you for your e mail.
We are unable to provide you with a response to the advice you have been given by a manufacturer of PU foam. Our original response of 12th September 2019 remains the same regarding the exothermic reaction, whereby heat is evolved when the chemical reaction occurs during the curing process.
Kind regards,
Jean Crimmins
