Dear Mr Peng,

Your request was received on 16 February 2019 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000 (‘the Act’).

You asked:

I would like to know the breakdown of PhD Geography and PhD Earth Sciences students by
their nationality admitted since 2012 by year. In addition, may I request the data for the number
of students of each nationality that are funded by either research councils, Gate scholarship or
scholarships provided by Cambridge Trust.

The requested information is attached.

Please note that the attached document should not be copied, reproduced or used except in
accordance with the law of copyright.

If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to make a
complaint or request an internal review of this decision, you should contact us quoting the reference
number above. The University would normally expect to receive your request for an internal review
within 40 working days of the date of this letter and reserves the right not to review a decision where
there has been undue delay in raising a complaint. If you are not content with the outcome of your
review, you may apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the
Information Commissioner cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted the complaints
procedure provided by the University. The Information Commissioner may be contacted at: The
Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF

Please note the following:

1.  Data are students admitted to PhDs in Geography, Physical Geography, and Earth Sciences
(including those based at the British Antarctic Survey), for the years 2012-13 to 2017-18.
Students studying in Geography or Earth Sciences as part of a Centre for Doctoral Training
(CDT) are not included.

2.  Data are based on the data submitted to HESA (https://www.hesa.ac.uk/collection/c17051),
apart from the data related to ‘Specified Cambridge funds’, which has been supplied by the
Student Funding Team within the Student Registry.

3.  Admissions for 2018-19 are not included, as the 2018-19 academic year is not complete, and
PhDs may begin in April 2019, that would not yet be accounted for.
