FOI request: Number of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller students

To whom it may concern,

I am writing to make an open government request for all the information to which I am entitled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. In order to assist you with this request, I am outlining my enquiry as specifically as possible. If however this request is too wide or unclear, I would be grateful if you would contact me as I understand that under the Act, you are required to advise and assist requesters.

I would like to find out the number of people who define their ethnicity as Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (or equivalent) who are accepted to study at the university each academic year. I would also like to discover whether these figures have changed over the past 10 years.

As such, could the following information please be made available:

a) The number of people who define their ethnicity as Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (or equivalent) who applied to study at the university each year for entry in the academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019.

b) The overall number of people who applied to study at the university each year for entry in the academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019. I would like these figures broken down by ethnicity.

c) The number of people who define their ethnicity as Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (or equivalent) who were accepted to study at the university each year for entry in the academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019.

d) b) The overall number of people accepted to study at the university each year for entry in the academic years 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019. I would like these figures broken down by ethnicity.

Where possible, I would like all application/ acceptance figures to be broken down by undergraduate/ postgraduate study.

I understand that under the Act, I should be entitled to a response within 20 working days. I would be grateful if you would confirm in writing that you have received this request.

Where you state in questions c and d , "were accepted to study" are you looking for information on those who were offered a place by the university regardless of whether they took it up or not? Or are you looking only for those who accepted the place and became registered students?

I refer to your request for information. The University's response is provided below.

The attached table provides answers to all questions.

The first tab shows all applicants per academic period and their ethnicity which answers questions A and B.

The second tab shows all those who were fully accepted (Unconditional Firm) and answers questions C and D. Where we don't hold information, 'no value' has been entered.

We do not hold data for 2008/09 entry and data for 2018/19 entry is not yet available as recruitment is ongoing. The University is therefore relying on an exemption in the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 Section 17 (1) (b) Information not held
