Dear Mili Jha
Freedom of information request
Thank you for your email of 6 June 2018 requesting information about graduate
destinations for MA Economics and MA Economics with Finance.
The University of Edinburgh is a global university, rooted in Scotland. We are globally
recognised for our research, development and innovation and we have provided world-
class teaching to our students for more than 425 years. We are the largest university in
Scotland and in 2016/17 our annual revenue was £929 million, of which £265 million was
research income. We have over 39,000 students and over 9,700 full-time equivalent
staff. We are a founding member of the UK’s Russell Group of leading research
universities and a member of the League of European Research Universities.
MA Economics and MA Economics with Finance
You requested the size of each class graduating in each year from 2015 to 2018 for the
University’s Master of Arts with Honours programmes in Economics, and Economics with
Finance. Table 1, below, shows numbers of students graduating from these programmes
in each year from 2015 to 2017. We do not yet hold graduate numbers for 2018 as, at
the time of your request, the examination boards were in process.

Graduate destinations
You asked how many of these graduates went on to further study and how many to
employment. Of those in employment you asked how many secured work within two
months of graduation. Finally, of those graduates in employment you asked where they
worked and in what profession.
Until now, the University has surveyed graduates on one specific date six months after
graduation, as part of the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey.
The published data gives numbers of students undertaking further study and numbers in
in employment. Employer, location, and job title are included where relevant. We only
hold information for those graduates who chose to respond. As our surveys show only
destinations on one specific date six months after graduation we do not hold information
on how many graduates secured work within two months of graduation.
From 2017/18 on the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) will conduct the DLHE
survey. The survey date has been extended to 15 months after graduation so students
graduating in summer 2018 will be surveyed in autumn 2020.
Destinations data for graduates from the School of Economics in 2015 is available on the
University’s website at
www.ed.ac.uk/careers/your-future/options/degree-
options/dlhe/cahss-destinations/economics-awards. Enclosures 1 and 2 give
destinations of 2016 graduates with MA Economics, and MA Economics with Finance.
Data for 2017 graduates is under embargo until 5 July 2018 and I will send it to you on
this date.
Technical exemption
Please note that as some of this information is available to you through the University
