Dear Ms Evans,
Your request was received on 18 August 2017 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 (‘the Act’).
You asked:
I would like to request, under the Freedom of Information Act, the following figures for BA
Economics, for the years of 2014, 2015 and 2016. Please include statistics for 2012 and/or
2013 as well, if possible.
(1) the number of applicants who have taken a gap year
(2) the number of offers given to applicants from (1)
(3) the number of applicants who, after a gap year, have resat exams
(4) the number of applicants from (3) who are given an offer
(5) the number of applicants who have been given a conditional offer after not being given an
offer the previous year
- are students who take gap years and resist exams disadvantaged? If so, to what extent?
The requested information, insofar as it is held, is attached. There is no systematic way to identify if an
applicant has resat exams and so questions 3 and 4 cannot be answered. Due to the holistic nature of
the University’s admissions processes it is impossible to say whether students who take gap years and
resist exams are disadvantaged.
Please note that the attached document should not be copied, reproduced or used except in
accordance with the law of copyright.
If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to make a
complaint or request an internal review of this decision, you should write to Dr Kirsty Allen, Head of the
Registrary’s Office, quoting the reference above, at The Old Schools, Trinity Lane, Cambridge, CB2
