“Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I request the average number of years of 
service in between officers receiving their commission and officers reaching the following 
ranks. 
 
1. Captain 
2. Major 
3. Lieutenant Colonel 
4. Colonel 
 
For each of the ranks above, could you also state the number of personnel who are currently 
at that rank”.

Act 2000.  
 
In order to answer your request, please could you confirm that you are asking for the above 
information only for the Army? 
 
Under Section 16 (Advice & Assistance), it may be useful for you to know that Royal Marines 
officer ranks are the same as Army officer ranks.  
 
Once you have clarified your request, I will be pleased to consider it again.
