Thank you for your requests of 27^th February 2017 under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (FOIA) for information in relation to fire appliance
sirens.

We have now processed your request and I can confirm that we hold the
information you have requested and this is detailed below.  For your
convenience, I have numbered and responded to your points in order.

 1. 2003/04 Mercedes-Benz Atego Pump/Pump Ladder.  These appliances have
been fitted with multi-toned 100 watt electronic sirens. The system is
activated by means of foot switches at both the Officer in Charge and
the driver's seating positions.

 2. 2007 Mercedes-Benz Atego Pump/Pump Ladder. These appliances have been
fitted with multi-toned, 100 watt electronic sirens. The siren
function is activated by pressing the “999” control switch located on
the driver's auxiliary dash panel and deactivated by the “Incident”
control switch. The front seat passenger may operate the audible
warning ‘change’ via a centrally mounted hand control .

 3. 2007 Mercedes-Benz Econic ALP/TL – ALP & TL .  Foot switches are
provided for the driver and Crew Manager. The siren is operated by
pressing either of the foot switches when the ‘999’ switch is selected
on. The siren will continue to sound until the foot switch is pressed
again.

 4. 2016 Mercedes-Benz Atego Pump/Pump Ladder. The system is armed through
an electronic control screen above the driver, control of the audible
warning is through operation of the road horn button and is the sole
responsibility of the driver, turning it on and off and changing the
tones. There is also a bull horn operated by a foot switch in the
driver’s footwell.

 5. 2004 Mercedes-Benz Atego Fire Rescue Unit.  The system is armed
through one of the foot switched adjacent to the driver and Officer in
Charge seating positions, the system will being on the two tone.
Control is via the pressing of the Intellitec  Siren Tone switch and
can be turned off by  switching off the siren system.

Dear London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (London Fire Brigade),

Many thanks for the response. I just have a clarification to ask. For the 2007 Mercedes-Benz Atego Pump/Pump Ladder, does the OIC activate and change the siren tones? Also, how is the bullhorn operated on the above appliance?

Yours faithfully,

Dear Mr [Name Removed]

Thank you for your email of 23 March 2017 in relation to the London Fire
Brigade’s  2007 Mercedes-Benz Atego Pump/Pump Ladder.

In relation to the 2007 Mercedes-Benz Atego Pump/Pump Ladder,  the OIC
activates and changes the tone.  There is no  authorised setting for the
bull horn on a 2007 Mercedes Benz Atego.

I hope you find this information useful.

Kind regards

Dear London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (London Fire Brigade),

May you just clarify how the 2004/2005 Fire Rescue Unit (FRU) operates its siren. Also, with the 2006/2007 Mercedes Atego, there are two pedals on the driver and OIC side, may you clarify what both do.

Yours faithfully,

Dear [Name Removed],

In response to your e-mail dated 29 July 2017, requesting information
about the mechanics of a London Fire Brigade (LFB) fire appliance sirens
and pedals.

I have addressed each point in turn below:

1.         May you just clarify how the 2004/2005 Fire Rescue Unit (FRU)
operates its siren?

The Audible Emergency warning systems on the FRU’s are operated by a
central command switch cluster on the cab centre console. The system is
armed by a floor switch and the switch cluster controls the changes in
warning tone.

2.         Also, with the 2006/2007 Mercedes Atego, there are two pedals
on the driver and OIC side, may you clarify what both do?

The pedals on the floor are in fact on/off switches for the audible
warning systems.

I hope you find the information provided useful. If you have any further
questions please let me know.

Your request has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
