Dear Mr Maidment
Thank you for your request received on 6 December 2016. I can confirm this request has
been considered under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the FOI Act).
I can also confirm the General Dental Council (GDC) holds information in the area of your
enquiry yet please do refer to the caveats in the notes section at the end of this response for
clarity on data provided.
The General Dental Council’s (GDC’s) response
Please find below a response to your request split into two parts:
Part A - results for each of your numbered requests using the data field ‘Country of
Nationality’ as the closest link within current GDC records for ‘Country of Origin’;
Part B - results for each of your numbered requests using the data field ‘Country of
Qualification’.
The results have been subdivided into the two main registration types, Dentists and DCPs
(Dental Care Professionals).
Although your request has specified a more granular breakdown of the results by area and
country, we are unable to provide this additional level of detail within the time and cost limit
set out in section 12 of the FOI Act. Section 12 of the FOI Act allows a public authority to
refuse to deal with a request where it estimates that it would exceed the appropriate limit to
locate, extract, and/or retrieve the information requested. The appropriate limit for the GDC
is 18 hours or £450. The estimate must be reasonable in the circumstances of the case.
Providing you with the data you have requested is not straight forward and it has taken a
considerable amount of time to set up our reporting system to be able to extract the
information at the level of detail provided in the response below. We estimate that it would
take several hours to set up our reports to be able to extract data relating to individual
countries and then 3-5 minutes to collate the data per individual country. The work that this
would entail along with the time we have already spent locating and extracting data for your
request would therefore exceed the appropriate limit of 18 hours under section 12 of the FOI
Act.
Naturally, if you were able to limit the number of regions and/or countries within the scope of
your request then we may be able to assist you further.

Notes Section
1. At present, no specific data records exist for “Country of Origin”. As above, Part A of
the request refers to the GDC’s records under the field, Country of Nationality.
Numbers in this category are lower than would be expected as this is not a
mandatory field.
2. However, results in Part B of this response using the field, Country of Qualification,
are an accurate reflection of the GDC’s register as data in this field is populated for
all live registrants.
3. Results for countries within the EU and EEA respectively have been grouped using
the recognised status of each country as quoted in the government website:
https://www.gov.uk/eu-eea
4. As a snapshot of the GDC register is required for this request, data is provided for all
live registrants as at 21 December 2016.
5. Duplicates are expected in this response where a registrant has both Dentists and
single or multiple DCP titles. This is consistent within wider GDC reporting on the
register.
6. Results for Country of Qualification UK include those Non-EEA candidates qualified
under the UK Statutory Exam.
