Security Needs and Usability in Grid e-Science Projects

The request was successful.

Dear University of Edinburgh,

Please supply, in electronic form, the Technical Report on
Usability from the UK e-Science Security Task Force entitled
"Security Needs and Usability in Grid e-Science Projects", which the EPSRC has suggested[1] may be held by the National e-Science Centre. I believe this report dates from 2005/6 and is a report on a small survey commissioned by EPSRC and the DTI [as it was then called] to identify the security needs of e-Science projects and usability issues with current security mechanisms.

Yours faithfully,

Bruce Beckles

Dear Mr Beckles

I write in response to your recent request for information on Security
Needs and Usability in Grid e-Science Projects.

I believe that the report you are seeking was not authored by University
of Edinburgh staff, however it has been available online since 2007
(please see):

I trust that this response is helpful.
If you are dissatisfied with this response, you may ask the University to
conduct a review of this decision. To do this, please contact the
University in writing (including by fax, letter or email) or in some other
recorded form (e.g. audio or video tape), describe the original request,
explain your grounds for dissatisfaction, and include an address for
correspondence. You have 40 working days from receipt of this letter to
submit a review request. When the review process has been completed, if
you are still dissatisfied, you may ask the Scottish Information
Commissioner to intervene.

Dear Mr Duckett,

Thank you for your reply and the reference to the paper in the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, which is very interesting. It is not, however, the report which I am seeking.

The report which I would like is called "Security Needs and Usability in Grid e-Science Projects" not "Stakeholder involvement, motivation, responsibility, communication: How to design usable security in e-Science". Also, the report I am after is a UK e-Science Security Task Force Technical Report not a journal paper/article.

In addition, the report I want is a report on a small specially commissioned survey, whilst the paper whose URL you provided is a discussion of the findings of four case studies of applying the AEGIS system design method to four e-Science projects. Finally, the report, and the survey on which it is reporting, were commissioned by EPSRC and the DTI (as it was then called), whilst the paper seems to have been produced for the CFP at [1].

Please could you either supply the report in question, or confirm that it is not held? (You said that "the report you are seeking was not authored by University of Edinburgh staff", which I believe is true, but I'm not sure how it is relevant - I am after a report which EPSRC has suggested[2] may be held by the National e-Science Centre; I'm afraid I don't see how its authorship is relevant to whether or not it is held by the University.)

Yours sincerely,

Bruce Beckles

Dear Gordon and Bruce

If the NeSC had the report it would be in our technical report series which is publicly available on the web.

Here are my best recollections.

I have scanned my personal files of TAG minutes and:
the minutes of 13, 15 and 17 TAG request a report from AS

By the 18th TAG the paper is promised for July 2005 --- as you can see it is illusive.

That leads me to the following security road map document:
and then I have:

which I think is what Bruce wants.

But I can't guarantee that there weren't other versions of it.
This copy was in my files for the 19 July 2005 TAG meeting.

Bruce I hope this is what you want. Technically the papers at TAG were confidential, but I cannot believe anyone else will worry now.
If I remember rightly, it received a fair amount of criticism at the meeting and that is probably why it wasn't offered as an e-Science Tech Report.

Couldn't Angela have given it to you? Its a lovely Saturday morning and this has taken some time tracking it down.

Malcolm

that though it has no date or authors, is dated July 2005.

The above message was sent to Mr Beckles personally; he passed it on to WhatDoTheyKnow for it to be posted to the thread. That explains why his name appears at the top of the message, the from name should read: "Malcolm Atkinson".

The original message contained in-line attachments which our system does not deal with very well; but hopefully no meaning has been lost.
