A ministerial department

HM Treasury is the UK government department responsible for public finance policy and economic policy.^[1] The Chancellor of the Exchequer has overall responsibility for the work of the Treasury.^[2]

The Treasury maintains the Online System for Central Accounting and Reporting (OSCAR II).^[3] OSCAR replaced the Combined Online Information System (COINS)^[4] in 2013, and was fully updated to OSCAR II in 2021. The OSCAR II database holds detailed information on budgets and spending across government departments, devolved administrations and other government-financed public bodies. Departments and other bodies submit data monthly, with the Treasury publishing a quarterly ‘transparency release’.^[5]

The Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI) is a part of HM Treasury.^[6]

The Treasury is sometimes referred to as HMT or the Exchequer.
