Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England

A public authority, also called Historic England

Historic England is the Government's statutory adviser on the historic environment. Officially known as the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, it is an executive Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Its principal powers and responsibilities are set out in the National Heritage Act (1983).

The Commission was previously know as English Heritage, but in April 2015 that organisation was split, with the National Heritage Collection side becoming a charity and retaining the name English Heritage, while the statutory commission side was maintained as a public body under the new name 'Historic England'.
