The GRO, since 2008, has been a part of Her Majesty's Passport Office. It's also known as the "National Register Office". The GRO oversees civil registration in England and Wales only.

Civil registration in Scotland handled by General Register Office for Scotland, and, in Northern Ireland, by the General Register Office for Northern Ireland (NISRA).
