Department for International Development

A ministerial department and a body that is now defunct, also called DFID

This body closed in September 2020[1,2]. To make a new request, you should visit its successor - the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, who we list separately.

The Department for International Development (DFID) is the part of the UK government that manages the UK's aid to poorer countries and aims to eliminate extreme poverty. DFID has offices in around 40 developing countries. The department is lead by the secretary of state for international development. The International Development Act (Reporting and Transparency) 2006 requires the secretary of state to report every year on how much money was spent on aid, how effective the spending has been.
