White-throated Sparrow, Old Winchester Hill

Susan Davis made this Freedom of Information request to Natural England

The request was successful.

From: Susan Davis

17 April 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please could you provide copies of any documents, emails of other
information you hold relating to the White-throated Sparrow
currently present at Old Winchester Hill nature reserve, Hampshire.

I am particularly interested in any documents, emails or other
information you hold relating to the effects that were predicted to
have occurred as a result of increased visitor pressure resulting
from the release by Natural England into the public domain of
information about the bird's presence had that occurred.

Yours faithfully,

Susan Davis

Dear Juliet,

Thanks for your reply. It would be helpful if you could expand on
the reasons why no information is held about this. The assessment
that I enquired about has been widely reported, and so I believe
that it did take place - it would be helpful if you could confirm
whether or not this is the case, and if it did take place, why no
documentation exists about it.

Yours sincerely,

Susan Davis

Dear Ms Davis,

Thank you for the email received on 21.05.09.

To assist you further could I please ask for some clarification? In your original request you asked for:

"Copies of any documents, emails of other information we hold relating to the White-throated Sparrow currently present at Old Winchester Hill Nature Reserve, Hampshire. Of particular interest was any documents, emails or other information we hold relating to the effects that were predicted to have occurred as a result of increased visitor pressure resulting from the release by Natural England into the public domain of information about the bird's presence had that occurred".

As stated in our response dated 15 May 2008 Natural England does not hold any of this information. In your reply on 21.05.09 you make reference to "an assessment that was widely reported". I am not sure what assessment you are referring to. Could you please clarify exactly what assessment you are seeking in order for me to assist you further?

Additionally it might be helpful to you if I could clarify a detail in your original request. You refer to "the release by Natural England into the public domain of information about the bird's presence had that occurred". This is inaccurate and it was not in fact Natural England who released these details into the public domain.

Yours sincerely

Dear Juliet,

Thanks for your reply, and sorry if my email was confusing.

As I understand it, Natural England made an assessment, when the
bird was found, that releasing the information into the public
domain would be likely to have a detrimental effect on the
ecological interest of the site. It is the documentation
surrounding this assessment which I am enquiring about.

I think also you may have missed or misunderstood the last three
words of my original request - I was asking about the predicted
effects from the release of information by Natural England **had
that occurred** - I'm aware that NE didn't release the information
yourselves. It is the details of the assessment which was made,
which resulted in NE deciding not to do so, which my original
request was about.

Hope that helps?

Yours sincerely,

Susan Davis
