Waste of money?

Madge made this Freedom of Information request to Kent County Council

The request was refused by Kent County Council.

From: Madge

4 June 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Could you please, under the FOI, tell me how much money you have
wasted answering the pointless, ill thought out and bordering on
insane queries from S. Smith, R. Soles and similar vexatious
querants.

Yours faithfully,
Madge

People are interested in what information the authorities hold. Simply asking questions can not be seen as vexatious, especially as the governments key word is 'transparency' otherwise how can we know that our money is being well spent.

Who is Madge? Her Majesty the Queen? Madonna?

If these requests are so pointless, why waste time asking about them?

This has the stamp of a petty bureaucrat all over it.

Dear "Madge"

Thank you for your email.

For a request for information to fall within the scope of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000, section 8 of the Act states that an applicant should
use their full name (that is title and/or initials and/or forename in
conjunction with their surname) as well as an address for correspondence
(an email address is adequate for this purpose). Please see the
Information Commissioner's recent guidance on this subject.

Therefore your request is not valid as it stands and Kent County Council
is unable to consider it in its current form.

KCC is aware that the WhatDoTheyKnow website is currently only designed
for public requests, and details of applicants, what they have asked, and
all responses that they receive are automatically published on the website
for anyone to read. If you do not want your real identity known to the
public at large, you could always resubmit your request (using your real
name of course!) directly to KCC either by email to
[2][Kent County Council request email], or by fax, or by post, contact
details below.

If you are unhappy with this decision, you can discuss the matter with the
Information Commissioner, who oversees compliance with the Freedom of
Information Act 2000. Details of what you need to do, should you wish to
pursue this course of action, are available from the Information
Commissioner's website
