War Pensions Committee - Northern Ireland

Gavin Bamford made this Freedom of Information request to Ministry of Defence

The request was successful.

From: Gavin Bamford

4 July 2010

Dear Ministry of Defence,

I understand that this committee has been set up by legislation
i.e.: "The War Pensions Committees Regulations 1990" and, in
particular there are to be 18 members appointed by the SoS.

I note that there are currently 12 members appointed i.e.:

John Davies
Ivan Grainger MBE
John Dunbar
Tom Hayes MBE
Irene Lyttle MBE
Alberta McMenemy
Mary Moreland, BA (Hons), MSc.
Charles Richardson MBE, UD
John Stewart
Amy Wall
Greg Wilson
Jim Henning

I would like to know, under the FOI Act, when each of these members
were appointed and what areas each one represents under the above
mentioned legislation?

In addition, please advise when each members term is due to end and
when the SoS will appoint further members to bring the committee to
the legilative strength?

How are members selected?

Thank you for your assistance.

Yours faithfully,

Gavin Bamford

Dear SPVA-DCS-Sec Dj(Best, Craig),

Thank you for your reply that partly answers my FOI request. May I
clarify my question?

The legislation states as below:

Membership of the Northern Ireland War Pensions Committee
4.—(1) The Northern Ireland War Pensions Committee shall consist
of 18 members appointed by the Secretary of State.

(2) Before appointing the members of the Northern Ireland Committee
the Secretary of State shall consult such bodies or organizations
in the area which represent any of the interests referred to in
paragraph (3) as he thinks fit.

(3) So far as reasonably practicable, the members appointed shall
include—
(a) seven members representative of war disablement pensioners,
(b) two members representative of war widows,
(c) three members representative of voluntary organizations
engaged wholly or partly in the care of ex-servicemen or
ex-servicewomen or the families of ex-servicemen or ex-servicewomen
in Northern Ireland, and
(d) two members representative of district councils in Northern
Ireland.

For each of the 12 NI committee members, recently retired, please
advsie from what areas they represent as defined in the above
section (4.3 - a, b, c or d)?

Thank you for your assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Gavin Bamford

Dear SPVA-DCS-Sec Dh(Spooner, Christine),

Thank you for your reply which unfortunately only referred me to
the new legislation and did not answer my query.

The members of the old committee have now recently retired due to
that new legislation. However, my request relates to their original
individual appointments and I requested:

For each of the 12 NI committee members, recently retired, please
advise from what areas they represent as defined in the [old
legislationas in previous letter] section (4.3 - a, b, c or d)?

I trust that you will now be in a position to answer this query.

Thank you for your assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Gavin Bamford
