Dear Mr Clarke,

Many thanks for your request. Much of what you require is published as a
matter of course in VOSA's annual Effectiveness Report. The 2007/08
financial year figures are as follows:

35 cases taken to the Traffic Commissioners. Outcomes: 8 revocations, 8
curtailments, 10 suspensions, 6 warnings and 3 no action taken.

A total of 7,339 prohibitions issued for drivers' hours, tachograph and
records offences.
A total of 4,377 prohibitions issued for overloading offences.
Defect (ie. roadworthiness) prohibitions issued at roadside spot checks as
follows: 19,298 issued to UK vehicles

14,702 issued to foreign vehicles

Total issued = 34,000 (from a total of 83,032 checks - a
prohibition
rate of 40.9%)
In addition, 1,124 roadworthiness prohibitions were issued at fleet checks
(carried out at an operator's premises).

The Effectiveness Report contains much statistical information on VOSA's
activities and can be found at
http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/publicat....

Figures for the financial year 2008/09 will be published in the next
Effectiveness Report.

If the above figures are not sufficient, and you need figures specifically
for the 2008 calendar year, please let me know. I realise that the
defect/roadworthiness figures have not been broken down into delayed and
immediate prohibitions. If the above figures meet your needs, I will
provide a breakdown for 2007/08 to correspond. If not, I will provide a
breakdown for 2008 along with the rest of the figures requested.

Additionally, you refer to defect notices. I am unsure exactly what you
mean by this. VOSA issues both prohibitions and technical inspection
reports at the roadside. Is it the technical inspection reports that you
are interested in? If not, could you explain what you require in a little
more detail to allow me to meet your requirements? Again, any information
we hold would be provided for either 2007/08 (financial) or 2008
(calendar) depending on your stipulation for the rest of the request.

Finally, you have asked for the number of graduated fixed penalty notices
that have so far been issued. As this is a new activity, there are no
published figures as yet. I will obtain this information for you and
include it with our formal response.

Please respond to me on the points raised to clarify your request. Once I
have received your response, I will send you a formal acknowledgement of
your request.

Kind regards.

Francesca Parkin

Hi Francesca

Many thanks for your prompt and full reply.

You are correct in stating that the Effectiveness Report 2007/08
contains the information I requested, thank you for informing me of
the document's existence as my own searches of the VOSA website had
failed to find the information.

Regarding the clarification about defect prohibitions, The
information I was looking for was a breakdown of the types of
prohibitions issued at roadside inspections. As it happens, that
information is also in the Effectiveness Report on table A4.24
(Trends in types of prohibition issued at the roadside). So thanks
again for bringing the document to my attention.

If you can obtain the information relating to the graduated fixed
penalties issued so far, it will be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Phil Clarke
