Dear Mr. Bamford,

Further to my brief acknowledgement of 18 May 2010 I am now in a position to respond more fully to your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Given the size and scale of respective locomotive fleets within NI Railways and Iarnród Éireann, asset sharing/asset loan arrangements are operated by the two railway companies. In addition significant maintenance activities on locomotives are also contracted between the companies.

The jointly operated Enterprise service is routinely operated by IE locos 206, 207 and NI Railways locos 208 and 209. In addition, Iarnród Éireann will frequently allocate additional locos 227, 228, 231, 230, 233 into the pool to cover for locomotive maintenance activities. NI Railways own non-Enterprise locomotives 111, 112 and 113 form part of this locomotive exchange pool.

Potential charges are incurred when an imbalance of locomotive loans occurs. Such charges are often netted off against locomotive and general rolling stock maintenance charges. The information you have requested i.e. income per locomotive per year is not retained in that format.

I trust the foregoing deals with the various queries which you raised.  If you are not satisfied with this reply you may complain to the Translink Commercial & Services Director, who has overall responsibility for Freedom of Information and Data Protection issues within the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company/Translink organisation.

If we are then unable to resolve any complaint that you may have, you may refer the matter to the Information Commissioner who will make an independent judgement.  The address of the Information Commissioner is: Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AT.  The address of the Information Commissioner's Office for Northern Ireland is: 51 Adelaide Street, Belfast, BT2 8FE.

Yours sincerely,
