The request was successful.

From: Deborah Beck

16 July 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please could you tell me what measures Peter Mandelson and members
of the Board have taken to reduce their energy consumption and
carbon footprint in their offices to meet BIS sustainability
committments?

Do Peter Mandelson and members of the Board use any surplus
electrical equipment in their personal offices e.g. kettles, coffee
percolators, fridges, fans or fan heaters?

Yours faithfully,

Deborah Beck

Dear Deborah

I have been asked to respond to your request below.

This Department is continuing to work towards achieving the energy
efficiency targets expressed in the Sustainable Operation of the
Government Estate (SOGE) framework. In June 2006, Government set its
central Departments and Executive Agencies a series of targets relating
to the sustainability of operations on its estate, including the
reduction of carbon emissions and energy usage, using a baseline year of
1999/2000.

Our main strategy has been to gain efficiencies through a reduction in
the physical size of the estate and the number of buildings occupied by
the introduction of new ways of working, including flexible desking. As
a result, the size of the BIS estate has reduced by 58% and our overall
carbon footprint has been cut by 26% since 1999/2000. Energy consumption
has reduced across the whole estate by 11.2% since 1999/2000.

The Department has recently undertaken energy audits across its estate.
Projects identified to reduce carbon emissions include using lighting
controls more effectively, improved building management controls at our
central London buildings at 1 Victoria Street and Kingsgate House,
piloting the use of LED technology in 1 Victoria Street and the
installation of Automatic Metering and Targeting across the BIS estate.
Although it is too early to evaluate the latter, it has already led to
the identification of instances where plant has been running when not
necessary.

As to items of electrical equipment used by the Secretary of State and
members of the Board, Peter Mandelson has no items as listed by yourself
in his office. All Board members sit in open plan accommodation and do
not have personal cellular office space. They therefore use the
centrally provided facilities available to all staff and have no surplus
items of electrical equipment. The only exception to this is that one
Board member has a fridge in his allocated meeting room.

I hope that the above answers your questions. Please let me know if you
require any further information.

Regards.

Steve
