Update on Game Consoles in prisons
John Simpson made this Freedom of Information request to HM Prison Service
The request was successful.
From: John Simpson
30 January 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
In newspaper reports and in response to Freedom of Information
requests it was revealed that 12,948 consoles were in Her Majesty’s
Prisons in England and Wales. Understandably this disgraceful and
disgusting policy of providing over 15% of the prison population
with computer games was changed when PSI 2008/32 on prisoners
access to game consoles was issued.
Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 please provide all
information on the number of Game Consoles that were removed
because of this change in policy. I do not seek the exact number of
consoles currently in England and Wales prisons (although if that
figure is available it would be useful) but following that PSI the
Prison Service or Ministry of Justice must have some idea how many
consoles have been removed or placed in to storage.
Please can you send me an acknowledgement that this FOI Request has
been received and I hope you will be able to help me with this
request within the 20 day limit required by law for a response.
Thankyou in advance
Yours faithfully,
John Simpson

Dear Amrit Lotay,
Thank you for your response to my Freedom of Information request
with some useful information. I understand that it will take too
long and cost too much to gather all of the information from each
of the prisons if the data is not already held centrally. I had
hoped that because the order to remove the consoles came from the
Secretary of State for Justice himself, some data would of been
requested by central government and it is very disappointing that
this was not done.
However, would it be possible to try and find out some information
on this matter from a single prison rather than all of the prison
estates? I understand that because of changes to peoples IEP status
and the prison population constantly changing it will be impossible
to locate a precise and up to date figure, but the authorities
running the prison must have recorded information of how many
consoles they removed following the PSI being issued.
I would like the data if possible about Her Majesty's Prison
Brixton. I hope it is possible to provide me with some information
i seek.
Thank you for your help so far.
Yours sincerely,
John Simpson

Dear Amrit Lotay,
On the 17th of April i replied to a response on my Freedom of
Information request. Whilst the response provided much of the
information i was seeking, sadly the important part of what i was
looking for was unavailable, so i sent the following response but
have heard nothing since and would like an update to find out if my
request is still being looked at or no further information is going
to be provided ...
