Dear Bradford City Council,
As of April 2010 can you tell me,
1. The number of vacant or disused shops within the boundaries of
Bradford City Centre.
2. The unemployment figures for the City of Bradford Metropolitan
District Council area?
3. The number of people on the City of Bradford Metropolitan
District Council housing list for 5 years or more.
I look forward to you reply.
Yours faithfully,
Mr Emmerson Walgrove

Mr Walgrove
Thank you for your recent FOI request. I have looked into the questions you raised and can now answer as below.
1. The latest count of vacant or disused shops was done in April and we recorded 88 vacant shops (18.3%)
2. In April 2010 there were 15,659 claimant unemployed in Bradford (those claiming Job Seekers Allowance). This is a rate of 5.1% of the working age population, compared to 4.8% for the Yorkshire & Humber region and 4.1% for the UK. (Source: Jobcentre Plus data. For the period October 2008 to September 2009 there was a total of 20,600 people unemployed across the district. This accounts for 8.9% of the working age population (Yorkshire & Humber 8.4%, UK 7.6%). This is based on a wider definition of unemployed including all people who are out of work, but looking for work and available to start work. (Source: Annual Population Survey. Monthly unemployment updates are published on the Bradford Economy website: http://bradfordeconomy.com/facts_and_fig...
3. The equivalent of the 'Housing (waiting) List' in Bradford is 'Homes', a choice based letting scheme run by Incommunities which is on the internet. As of 18/05/10 there were 1,185 individuals who have been on the system for more than five years. It cannot be presumed that all these individuals are currently actively seeking social housing which were formerly 'Council Houses' prior to stock transfer in February 2003. All the Council's housing stock was transferred to Incommunities (a Housing Association) at this time.
