William made this Freedom of Information request to Cabinet Office
Cabinet Office did not have the information requested.
From: William
23 February 2008
Dear Sir or Madam
Please can you supply me the key document describing the basis on
which Cabinet Office's Office of the e-Envoy agreed with the domain
name owners of ukonline.co.uk (which I believe is UK Online Ltd)
that HMG could start to use the similar-sounding domain name
ukonline.gov.uk? This would have been around the year 2000.
This was for the main HMG web site (previously known as open.gov.uk
and currently as direct.gov.uk)? I expect the document in question
would be a contract or MOU committing to pay UK Online Ltd some
money and perhaps to make other concessions.
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Yours faithfully,
William Heath

Dear Mr Heath,
Thank you for your email.
I have been advised of the following by colleagues here at the cabinet
Office.
The Office of the e-Envoy ceased to exist in June 2004. UK Online
evolved into Directgov in 2004. Directgov in turn left the Cabinet
Office in April 2006 and moved to the Central Office of Information; can
I therefore suggest that you readdress your there. For your convenience
I include the contact details of its Freedom of Information team:

I hope this helps. If I do not hear from you again I will assume that
you do not require the cabinet office to progress this matter further.
Kind regards,
Joel McMillan
