Dear Ms MacLaren,

Thank you for your email of 21 October 2008 in which you have requested
statistical information on the number of Australians currently working
in the UK social care industry by region. This falls to be dealt with
under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Section 1(3) of the Freedom of Information Act provides that a public
authority need not comply with a request for information unless any
further information reasonably required to identify and locate the
information is supplied. I am unclear about the exact scope of the
information in which you are interested. To ensure that we provide you
with the right information, please could you clarify your request, so
that we can process your request.

We do not unfortunately hold information on the number of Australians
currently working in the UK in the 'social care' industry.

The information we do hold is statistical information on the number of
approved work permits issued to Australian nationals working in the UK
by region. However, this does not provide you with information on
approved work permits in the 'social care' industry.

Please see the attached tables providing examples of the categories we
hold by industry sector and by occupation including those categories
that may fall under 'social care'.

<<Industry Codes.xls>> <<Occupation Codes.xls>>
Should you wish to receive statistical information on the number of
approved work permits issued to Australian nationals working in the UK
by region, with a further breakdown by either industry sector or by
occupation, you will need to re-submit your request for information
stating which sector or occupation you are interested in and will also
need to clarify the time period your require.

When you provide this information we will aim to send you a full
response to your request within twenty working days of its receipt. I
look forward to hearing from you shortly. However, please note that if I
do not receive appropriate clarification of your request within three
months from the date of this correspondence, I will consider this
request to be closed.

I hope this is of help.

Kind Regards

Thank you for your reply. I would be grateful if you could look
further into my request to find the statistical number of approved
work permits issued to Australian Nationals working in all regions
of the UK in the Health and Medical services (1010) as Social
workers (numbered as both 01051 & 01020) over the time period since
2000

Yours sincerely,

Dear Workpermits, Freedom of Information,

thank you so much for this information. I am very grateful - as the
stats suggest the small number of individuals recognised as cleared
and approved as social workers is no doubt indicative of the major
problem I have had trying to track them down myself over the last 2
months.

Yours sincerely,

Jen MacLaren
