Dear Mr Davis

Thank you for your request of 02 March in which you asked for the
following information:

Please could you supply me with details of the income and expenditure
associated with the council's tyre recycling scheme.

Please find attached a spreadsheet outlining tyre income and expenditure
for the last 3 years. This includes:

* the amount of tyres by year,
* income from Tyres and DIY, net of VAT,
* expenditure is shown for tyres only and not DIY waste.

Please note that the current year's data (2009/2010) is to the end of
January 2010. The expenditure for the first 6 months of 2009/2010 was
£5409, and the expenditure since 29 September 2009 has been incorporated
into the new Waste Recycling Contract.

2009/10 is the first year that Oxfordshire County Council has been able to
ascertain the difference between DIY income and tyre income accurately,
prior to that we extrapolated a cost which was based on the amount of
tyres taken to Waste Recycling Centres. However, this also included all
tyres taken in by Waste Collection Authorities (WCA). The WCA take tyres
to Waste Recycling Centres which have been fly tipped.

Oxfordshire County Council sets the level for tyre charges. The Head of
Waste Management and the Service Delivery Manager make recommendations, on
charging levels, which are then approved by Council members.

Dear Tracey Kelleher,

Is it possible to break down the figures for numbers of tyres
received, into

- those which were brought in and paid for
- those which have been fly tipped and brought in by the Waste
Collection Authorities?

Yours sincerely,

James Davis

James Davis left an annotation (24 March 2010)

I hadn't thought about the difference between tyres which were brought in and tyres which had been fly tipped and recovered. I think this explains why the council's charges can be higher than a the local tyre shop's disposal charges.
