From: W Cooper
30 March 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
In relation to the proposal to suspend, by Order in Council, the
local legislature of the Turks and Caicos Islands in favour of UK
direct rule via the islands' Governor, I would be grateful if you
could inform me of:
(a) the extent to which the citizens of the Turks and Caicos
Islands were consulted as regards the proposed dissolution of the
cabinet and legislature;
(b) whether consideration has been given to the possibility that,
given their own House of Assembly will be suspended indefinitely
under the proposals, the citizens of Turks and Caicos might be
granted a vote in UK elections until such a time as their own
parliament is restored;
(c) whether the FCO has had any discussions regarding the
introduction of direct rule in any of the other Overseas
Territories during 2008-2009, for the purposes of curbing
corruption, combating tax avoidance, or otherwise.
Please note that I fully understand if you are unable to respond to
any of the above until the publication of the final report by the
TCI Commission of Inquiry.
Yours faithfully,
W Cooper
