Treasury Plans for User-Friendy Searchable Version of COINS

Richard Taylor made this Freedom of Information request to Her Majesty’s Treasury

The request was successful.

From: Richard Taylor

11 July 2010

Dear Her Majesty's Treasury,

Speaking on the subject of the treasury's combined online
information system (COINS) in the House of Commons on the 8th of
June 2010 the chancellor of the exchequer, George Osborne, said:

"By August, we will be able to publish a more user-friendly version
of the data; the current version is quite difficult to operate. We
need a couple of months to get the computer software to enable
people to search the database."

The Treasury's webpage on the COINS data release states:

"subsets of data from the COINS database will also be made
available in more accessible formats by August 2010."

I would like you release the following information:

1. The specification for the "user-friendy", "searchable" version
of the COINS data which George Osborne indicated the government is
to make available in August.

2. The current anticipated launch date, and proposed URL, for the
new service.

3. Details of any consultation run, or unsolicited suggestions
received, relating to the specification of the service.

4. Any minutes, policy statement, or similar recorded information
which provides insight into the government decision to provide this
service itself; and specifically information on any consideration
given to others who already provide, or are expected to provide
this service.

5. Who will be creating the service? If this work been contracted
out, can you tell me who to.

6. Details of the cost, or estimated cost, of providing the
service.

Regards,

I'm wondering if the treasury are spending tax-payer's money trying to build something to compete with the likes of:

The response states that no new system is being created; but in order to make the data more accessible pre defined subsets of the COINS database are to be offered for download.

I think that what the Treasury are doing is the right thing.

The response does show that when the Chancellor George Osborne said that: "computer software to enable people to search the database" was being developed he was wrong.
