Dear Sir or Madam,
What is the defined role of the "Examinations Officer" in relation
to secondary education? Are performance validation checks routinely
carried out?
Yours faithfully,

Dear Mr Nicholson
Thank you for your email requesting information about the role and job
specification of examination officers.
Please find below a response to your query
Examination Officers
What do they do?
They ensure that examinations in schools run smoothly. Examinations
officers oversee and administer the whole exam process, including
sorting out timetable clashes; making sure special requirements are met;
and liaising with external examining bodies.
Exam time is a nerve-racking experience for most children and
examinations officers play a crucial part in making sure that they have
all the support and information they need.
What skills are required?
Excellent communication and time-management skills, the ability to work
under pressure and be highly organised
In the past the role was often performed by teachers, but schools now
have full-time positions. Examinations officers tend to have a
background in administration and have often had experience working in
schools. Much of the training is on the job, provided by colleagues and
supported by the National Assessment Agency (NAA) and the Examination
Officers' Association.

Dear Sir or Madam, Thank you for the information received thus far.
The role of Examination Officer is now clear to me. However, my
question regarding the performance/ validation of EOs remains
unclear. As the scholastic output of each school is channeled
through one person, are any checks carried out or required to be
performed as a routine protection?
Yours sincerely,
Office for Standards in Education

In response to your enquiry I would like to make you aware that we do
not carry out checks or regulate any of the staff in school settings and
this would be the responsibility of the DCSF or the local education
