Dear Mr Walker,

I am writing in response to your request for information in relation to the Council's involvement with the Innovation Unit.

I can advise that in 2006 the Innovations Unit in conjunction with NCSL launched national field trials to look at Leadership beyond a Single Institution. Knowsley Council was successful in securing two field trials of which Governance was one, and Elaine Ayre (Acting Assistant Director of the Council's Department of Education & Lifelong Learning as it was then known) was the Sponsor.

The Innovations Unit provided funding for the purpose of research and development for each field trial and the Council received £30k which was used in the Governance research and development project. Attached is a copy of the submission document that the Innovations Unit required and this should provide you with the information you require.

If you should have any questions in relation to this response, please contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Len Mitchell
