Dear Mr Trebiloc,

Re: Request for Information – former Corpus Christi Basilica in Miles
Platting (Reference CXR/7WVJ9L)

Thank you for your request for information, which was received by the City
Council on 16^th October, 2009 and has been considered under the
provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

You asked for information on what company is currently occupying the Old
Catholic Basilica and adjacent building that was once the offices of the
religious brotherhood on Varley Street Miles Platting.

This building is currently unoccupied. A planning application has been
submitted for change of use of the Basilica to banqueting facilities with
associated parking and boundary treatment (reference no. 090205) which was
considered by the Planning and Highways Committee on 22nd October. A
decision was deferred pending a site visit. The planning application can
be viewed through the Planning public access system via the City Council's
website:-

Dear Lesley Spencer,

Many Thanks for your reply.

It is interesting that you say that they are applying for planning
permission when last year there was large banner outside last year
indicating it was functioning as a banqueting hall and there were
also several occasions when such events took place and also to to
be noted modifications were made to one of the building. I guess
planning permission had already been made?

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr Trebiloc,

Thank you for your subsequet request for additional information, which was
received by New East Manchester (NEM) on 28th October, 2009 and has been
considered under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I have contacted the City Council's Planning Officer with regard to your
enquiry. She has informed me that the owners did briefly display a banner
sign advertising the use as a banqueting hall. However when the Officer
met the applicant on site she advised them to remove the banner as they
did not have consent for the use nor for the display of the advertisement.
The applicant duly removed the banner.

With regards to whether the premises have already hosted events, as far as
the City Council is aware there has only been one such occasion which was
around the same time as the display of the banner. When the applicant and
their agent were questioned about this, they said it had been a private
party. With no further proof to the contrary this explanation was accepted
and there has as such been no breach in planning law.

There have been some works carried out at the premises, but these were to
stop the ingress of water which was damaging the fabric of the building
and were included in the application for listed building consent.

I hope this information clarifies the situation.

Dear Lesley Spencer,

thank you for the response

My point really is that the local people, and
the friends of the Basilica weren't informed that the Church was
being sold off and redeveloped. That there was already works done
to some of outer the buildings and this buildings had already been
in operation as a 'eastern banqueting hall' complete with car park,
noisy late night people leaving and traffic congestion. All this
with out planning permission and no community information about
this change of use and no help from any quarter to keep this
historic 100 year old building as a church in the community. Now it
isn't part of the local community

Yours sincerely,

T Trebiloc
