Teachers who are members of political Parties.

Mark Walker made this Freedom of Information request to Shropshire Council

The request was successful.

From: Mark Walker

9 October 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

By letter of 30 September 2009, The Secretary of State Ed Balls
appointed Maurice Smith to enquire into the "promotion of racism in
schools". Part of the review is aimed at determining whether
members of the British National Party (BNP) should be allowed to
work as teachers or in the wider school workforce.

Please provide the following information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.

1. Has your authority ever found a member of the BNP or any other
political Party guilty of a disciplinary offence related to their
Party membership in the last three years? If so please give
information as to when and how many.
2. Has any parent complained to you regarding the Party membership
of any employee or the expression of political views within School
classrooms under your authority during the last three years?
3. What safeguards do you currently have in place to prevent
members of any political Party promoting their views within
Schools?

Dear Mr Walker

Further to your recent Freedom of Information request which we received on
9 October 2009, please find below the information you require.

1. Has your authority ever found a member of the BNP or any other
political Party guilty of a disciplinary offence related to their Party
membership in the last three years? If so please give information as to
when and how many.
We are not aware of any disciplinary action in Schools which relates to
membership of the BNP or any other political party.

2. Has any parent complained to you regarding the Party membership
of any employee or the expression of political views within School
classrooms under your authority during the last three years?
We are not aware of any parental complaints regarding school staff and
expressions of political views. However, not all parental complaints would
be known to HR and may be dealt with a school level.

3. What safeguards do you currently have in place to prevent
members of any political Party promoting their views within Schools?
The Council's Code of Conduct and a specific Code of Conduct for staff
working in Schools covers in part the requirement for school staff to
avoid any conflict of interest which may impinge on professional
responsibilities and also to declare non-financial interests such as
membership of organisations. The Councils Code of Conduct covers Political
Neutrality and also Politically restricted posts.

We trust that this answers your request satisfactorily. However, if you
should require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact
me.

Yours sincerely

Heather Jones
