8 October 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
By letter of 30 September 2009, The Secretary of State Ed Balls
appointed Maurice Smith to enquire into the "promotion of racism in
schools". Part of the review is aimed at determining whether
members of the British National Party (BNP) should be allowed to
work as teachers or in the wider school workforce.
Please provide the following information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.
1. Has your authority ever found a member of the BNP or any other
political Party guilty of a disciplinary offence related to their
Party membership in the last three years? If so please give
information as to when and how many.
2. Has any parent complained to you regarding the Party membership
of any employee or the expression of political views within School
classrooms under your authority during the last three years?
3. What safeguards do you currently have in place to prevent
members of any political Party promoting their views within
Schools?

Following receipt of your request for information on 8 October 2009 and
our acknowledgement of 9 October, the City of London (CoL) responds as
follows.
The City (the "Square Mile") has a resident population of around 8,000 and
only maintains one school in its capacity as a Local Education Authority,
namely the Sir John Cass's Foundation Primary School, a voluntary aided
school. Please see the following link further details:

1. Has your authority ever found a member of the BNP or any other
political Party guilty of a disciplinary offence related to their Party

NO

under your authority during the last three years?
NO
3. What safeguards do you currently have in place to prevent members of
any political Party promoting their views within Schools?
The School does not allow any political views to be promoted to children
or parents. All teachers are expected to follow the Code of Conduct and
Practice for Registered Teachers set out by the General Teaching Council
for England. Any teacher or other member of staff who may be a member of
any political party could be considered under the School Disciplinary
Procedures if they were promoting their political party views within the
School. Any such case would be handled by the Governing Body with HR
advice and guidance from the LEA.
We hope that this assists.
