Dear Sir or Madam,

By letter of 30 September 2009, The Secretary of State Ed Balls
appointed Maurice Smith to enquire into the "promotion of racism in
schools". Part of the review is aimed at determining whether
members of the British National Party (BNP) should be allowed to
work as teachers or in the wider school workforce.

Please provide the following information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.

1. Has your authority ever found a member of the BNP or any other
political Party guilty of a disciplinary offence related to their
Party membership in the last three years? If so please give
information as to when and how many.
2. Has any parent complained to you regarding the Party membership
of any employee or the expression of political views within School
classrooms under your authority during the last three years?
3. What safeguards do you currently have in place to prevent
members of any political Party promoting their views within
Schools?

30 October 2009

Dear Mr Walker,

I refer to your request for information regarding teachers who are
members of political parties, which was received on 9th October, 2009
and has been dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

The specific information you requested was as follows:

1. Has your authority ever found a member of the BNP or any other
political Party guilty of a disciplinary offence related to their Party
membership in the last three years? If so please give information as to
when and how many.

2. Has any parent complained to you regarding the Party membership of
any employee or the expression of political views within School
classrooms under your authority during the last three years?

3. What safeguards do you currently have in place to prevent members of
any political Party promoting their views within Schools?

In response, I can confirm that we hold no recorded information in
relation to your request.

This is because there have been no instances of disciplinary action
being taken against employees in connection with an "offence" related to
policital party membership in the last three years.

Also, no complaints have been received by the Local Education Authority
(LEA) from parents in relation to teachers' party membership or
expression of political views.

Finally, with regard to your question regarding safeguards in schools,
the LEA holds no relevant information as this would be a matter for
individual schools.

Should you wish to direct your request to schools in Carmarthenshire,
their contact details may be accessed as follows:

If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact
me.

Yours sincerely
