Teacher recruitment on Television

John Simpson made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Children, Schools and Families

The request was successful.

From: John Simpson

6 July 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Under the freedom of information act please provide me with details
on how much this department has spent advertising on national
television for Teacher recruitment. Please provide costs for the
last few years available, along with any documents or research done
on how effective it has been.

Also please release the current estimate or centrally held figure
on how short on staff schools in England (or UK depending on how
its calculated) are.

It seems strange that in a time of growing unemployment and future
cut backs this department needs to continue wasting money on such
adverts. Please release any documents on if these adverts are going
to stop in the coming months.

Yours faithfully,

John Simpson

Dear Mr Simpson,

Thank you for your email dated 6th July. I am responding to your FOI
request for information about Departmental spending on advertising on
national television for teacher recruitment along with details of how
effective this has been.

Firstly to explain, there is no direct TV media spending by the Department
on teacher recruitment advertising. We fund the Training and Development
Agency for Schools (TDA) through grant-in-aid for teacher recruitment
activity which includes covering the costs of the current set of TV
adverts, which bear the Agency's name.

Secondly, in order to meet your request I attach the following:

(1) A document from the TDA showing how much of the grant-in-aid it has
received from the department has been spent on TV advertising in the last
2 years, along with details of the effectiveness of them (the document
also shows the plans for the next recruitment round).

(2) A table showing the latest published teacher vacancy details for
January 2009 and previous years.

The aim of the TDA's teacher recruitment campaign is to ensure that
sufficient high quality people train to teach each year to meet the needs
of schools, particularly in secondary priority subjects such as maths and
science.

The TV advertising element of the recruitment campaign plays a vital role
in inspiring individuals to consider a career in teaching, in addition to
raising the status of the teaching profession as a whole. The decision to
become a teacher can take an individual several years. With this in mind
the TDA takes a long term view with regards to advertising. We believe it
is essential to keep the teaching profession at the forefront of people's
minds, even during an economic downturn, to ensure a sufficient supply of
high quality teachers in future years.

Finally, if you have any queries about this letter, please contact me.
Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future
communications.

If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should
make a complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar
months of the date of this letter. Your complaint will be considered by
an independent review panel, who were not involved in the original
consideration of your request.

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the
Department, you may then contact the Information Commissioner's Office.

Yours sincerely,
