From: Paula Sainthouse
28 June 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
May I please request a summary of how the costs involved in the
Swine Flu Public Information Campaign are broken down? I understand
the total spent neared 8 million in May.
I would like to know how the costs were allocated to various
initiatives such as Information Leaflets, Dedicated Telephone line,
Advertising, conferences, etc.
Thank you very much.
Yours faithfully,
Paula Sainthouse

Dear Ms Sainthouse,
Thank you for your email of 28 June requesting, under the Freedom of
Information (FOI) Act, a summary of the costs for the recent swine flu
public information campaign. Your email has been passed to me for reply.
The swine flu information campaign included television, press and radio
advertising, which ran from 30 April to 13 May 2009, and paid-for online
search priority. It included the distribution of an information leaflet
during May to UK households. Extra copies of the leaflet were sent to GP
surgeries, pharmacies, halls of residence and Primary Care Trusts, and to
members of the Publicity Register, which consists of intermediary
organisations who deal with the public, all of which were able to order
further copies for distribution.
The aims of the campaign were to educate the public about good respiratory
and hand hygiene and to raise awareness of the flu information line.
The overall cost of the information campaign was around -L-7million, which
breaks down as follows:
o Advertising media and production (England only), branding, and
online search -L-2,431,447
o Print -L-1,108,368
o Distribution of leaflet -L-3,362,038
o Flu information line -L-51,828
These figures are exclusive of VAT.
Additional advertising was carried out in Wales, Scotland and Northern
Ireland and you may wish to contact the Devolved Administrations for
further information about this.
I hope this reply is helpful.
