Dear Mr/Ms Elwell
Thank you for your email of 8 April requesting, under the Freedom of Information Act, information concerning suicide rates in hospitals/Mental Health wards/units, and within 1 year of leaving such units, within Sandwell, West Midlands, covering the last 5 years; also the overall suicides statistics across Sandwell as a whole over the last 5 years.
I am sorry to advise you that the information you requested is not held by the Department of Health. However, the National Confidential Inquiry (NCI) into Suicide can provide data for Sandwell Mental Health and Social Care Trust, for Inquiry cases only, (those people who were in contact with mental health services in the 12 months prior to death). The NCI is based at Manchester University, and contact details are available through its website, www.centre-suicide-prevention.man.ac.uk . The most recent years of data in the public domain go up to 2005. For the last five years of available Inquiry data (2001-2005) there were 41 Inquiry suicide cases.
If you wish to discuss these issues directly with this Trust, their website address, which includes contact details, is: www.smhsct.nhs.uk .
