Student Deposits

Prof. I.T. Swide made this Freedom of Information request to Churchill College, Cambridge

The request was successful.

From: Prof. I.T. Swide

18 February 2010

Dear Churchill College, Cambridge,

All students are required to give the College a deposit, for their
duration at Cambridge. Please can you tell me the current value of
the deposits you hold.

Also, please can you tell me the profit you made in the last
financial year on these deposits. This includes profit from
investments and interest. If these deposits were not handled as a
separate investment, an approximate estimate will be sufficient.

Yours faithfully,

Prof. I.T. Swide

Dear Professor Swide,

I apologise for the delay in replying to your request: I was out of the
country for a week, followed by my finance manager the following week.

At Churchill College we have an slightly unusual system for student
deposits:

On arrival students are required to give us a deposit, if in a
college-owned room, of a fixed amount based on the average anticipated
termly bill for accommodation and catering. Catering is available
three/four meals a day, seven days of the week for most of the year. They
then receive a term and a half's credit, the bill for that term being due
half way through the following term. In the case of the summer term
(April-June) payment is not due to November.

The college therefore plainly does not make any profit on the deposits,
but the system does mean that in their last term at Churchill, the
students do not find themselves, in the middle of exams, having to worry
about finding the money for their last term's bill!

The current value of deposits is £867,000. These are not held separately
as they are needed to fund the running costs of the college premises and
catering. It cost us £4.33 million to run our accommodation last year,
including depreciation, and the fixed cost of the catering operation was
£732K.

Yours sincerely,

Jennifer Brook
