The request was successful.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I would very grateful if you could help me please. I wish to know
how many stop and searches have been carried out by Police in
Scotland between 1998-2009 by ethnicity and the outcome of the
search (was the person who was searched charged). I also would
appreciate it if you could kindly tell me why the most up to date
information (statistics) on this subject published on the Internet
only go up to 2001 (POLICE STOP AND SEARCH AMONG WHITE AND MINORITY
ETHNIC YOUNG PEOPLE IN SCOTLAND Reid Howie Associates Ltd.,
November 2001) and why nothing more recent has been published since
2001 on the web. Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Ms Gathercole

Dear Sir or Madam,
With regard to my Freedom of Information Request "Stop and Search
Statistics In Scotland 1998-2009" made on 2nd June, is it possible
to have the information that I requested for each year separately
and opposed to the cumulative total. If the information could be
put in a table please, then that would be even better. Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Ms Gathercole

REF: Freedom of Information Case: FoI/09/00749
Dear Ms Gathercole
Thank for your Email request for information under the Freedom of
Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA), which I received on 2 June 2009.
Although the complete information that you require is not held centrally
by the Scottish Government, I have been able to furnish you with collated
stop and search statistics for the reporting periods from 2008 to 2009 -
see attached pdf file.
[1]Acrobat Document
May I suggest that you perhaps approach the Freedom of Information
contacts for the individual police forces for more accurate and hopefully
more complete statistics.
The gateway link for contact details is: [2]http://www.scottish.police.uk/
and the link for British Transport Police is

Otherwise, you may wish to contact ACPOS who may be able to help you
further. Their contact details are as follows:

A recent Parliamentary Question, reference S3W-20281, was also raised on
the matter:
It can accessed by the link
[4]http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/busine...
You asked about POLICE STOP AND SEARCH AMONG WHITE AND MINORITY ETHNIC
YOUNG PEOPLE IN SCOTLAND, Reid Howie Associates Ltd., November 2001, and
you questioned why nothing more recent has been published since 2001 on
the web.
The research was commissioned as part of the recommendations of the
Stephen Lawrence Inquiry: Review of Scottish Executive Action Plan, which
can be accessed at
[5]http://www.scotland.gov.uk/justice/lawre...
The 2001 research was a one-off research project which aimed to identify
emerging issues in relation to the use of stop and search powers by police
forces in Scotland. It followed the Stephen Lawrence Enquiry in England
and Wales. It was not a presentation of national data on the use of stop
and search for white and ethnic minority young people.
The decisions about which data are routinely collected and published by
the Scottish Government are based on a number of factors and are
continually reviewed.
For your additional information, may I inform you that the Scottish Crime
and Justice Survey 2009/10 will ask 4,000 adults about their experience of
being stopped and searched by police officers in Scotland in the 12 months
prior to interview. Respondents are also asked about their level of
satisfaction with how the police handled the matter and if their
experience changed their perception of the police. The results from the
SCJS 2009/10 will be published on the Scottish Government website in
Autumn 2010.
I am sorry we are unable to assist more with your enquiry. If you are
unhappy with this response to your request, you may ask us to carry out an
internal review, by writing to:
DIRECTOR-GENERAL JUSTICE and COMMUNITIES
FLOOR 1W.11
ST ANDREWS HOUSE
Regent Road
Edinburgh
EH1 3DG
Your request should explain why you wish a review to be carried out, and
should be made within 40 working days of receipt of this letter, and we
will reply within 20 working days of receipt. If you are not satisfied
with the result of the review, you then have the right to make a formal
complaint to the Scottish Information Commissioner.
Yours Sincerely
