Sponsorship Funding from BP
A Freedom of Information request to The Tate Gallery by John Volynchook
Waiting for an internal review by The Tate Gallery of their handling of this request.

22 October 2008
Dear Sir or Madam
Please can you provide the following information regarding
sponsorship funding from BP.
I would like to know the total amount of annual sponsorship money
from BP given to The Tate Gallery; please state the percentage of
total corporate sponsorship and the percentage of total running
costs that this figure represents. I would be grateful if you could
provide these figures for each of the past five years.
Please provide any information or reports regarding environmental,
‘reputational’ or similar audits conducted by the gallery relating
to BP’s sponsorship.
I would also like to know when the contract or agreement for
sponsorship with BP is scheduled for renewal.
Please can you confirm (with amounts) sponsorship funding to the
gallery from any other oil, coal mining, petrochemical or
pharmaceutical companies.
Yours faithfully, John Volynchook

Dear Sir or Madam,
Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of
Information reviews.
I am writing to request an internal review of The Tate Gallery's
handling of my FOI request 'Sponsorship Funding from BP'.
My reasons for asking an internal review of this request are that
in accordance with FOI guidelines, the exemption as given by Jason
Becker only applies if a breach of confidence would be
"actionable". Any such breach of confidence will only be
"actionable" if a person could bring an action and be successful.
The courts have recognised that a person will not succeed in an
action for breach of confidence if the public interest in
disclosure outweighs the public interest in keeping the confidence
as I believe to be the case in this instance.
A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is
available on the Internet at this address:

Yours sincerely,
John Volynchook
