Department for Transport

Dear Charlie Burton,

I am writing regarding your request for information, which I received on
27 February 2009. In that request you asked for information on the
Department for Transport's Scientific Advisory Committees.

The Department currently has eight bodies within its structure which have
previously been identified as performing some of the functions of a
Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) as defined by DIUS. These are:

o [1]Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC);
o [2]Commission for Integrated Transport, and
o [3]The Secretary of State for Transport's Honorary Medical Advisory
Panels on:

o Driving & Psychiatric Disorders
o Driving & Diabetes Mellitus
o Driving & Visual Disorders
o Driving & Disorders of the Nervous System
o Driving & Disorders of the Cardiovascular System
o Alcohol, Drugs & Substance Misuse & Driving.

Each of the links given above provides the information you requested on
details of when they met, who was present, and the topic of discussion.

In addition there are a number of other groups which are convened and
consulted as part of the Department's normal business. After careful
consideration, we judge that attempting to identify all such groups which
have met since the Department's inception in 2002 would incur further
costs, in excess of the appropriate limit of £600. Section 12(1) of the
Act removes the obligation upon a public authority to do so where they
estimate the costs would exceed the appropriate limit.

If you wish to narrow your request or are able to provide any additional
information regarding areas of particular interest, we will be pleased to
consider your request further.

In keeping with the spirit and effect of the Freedom of Information Act,
all information is assumed to be releasable to the public unless exempt.
The Department will, therefore, be simultaneously releasing to the public
the information you requested, together with any related information that
will provide a key to its wider context.

If you are unhappy with the way the Department has handled your request or
with the decisions made in relation to your request you may complain
within two calendar months of the date of this letter by writing to the
Department's Information Rights Unit at:

Zone D/04

Ashdown House

Sedlescombe Road North

Hastings

East Sussex TN37 7GA

E-mail: [email address]

Please see attached details of DfT's complaints procedure and your right
to complain to the Information Commissioner.from [department] you may ask
for an internal review. You should contact [name of official and address]
