Sale of the Nuclear Bunker off Brooklands Avenue, Cambridge

A Freedom of Information request to Government Office for the East of England by Simone Barrett-White

Government Office for the East of England did not have the information requested.

Simone Barrett-White

3 July 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please could you supply me, preferably in electronic format, all
information pertaining to the disposal by the City Council of the
nuclear bunker located off Brooklands Avenue.

This should include, but not limited to, details of offers that
were made, what criteria were undertaken to decide the successful
purchaser, who purchased it, any information on promises made by
the buyer on what will happen to it and so on.

Also, if there are any plans to develop the site, these should be
included in the response to this request if possible. Any other
information held by the City Council with regards to the nuclear
bunker (for example, evacuation planning, personnel provisioning,
as so on) would be appreciated. If this is beyond the remit of the
council, I would be grateful if you could direct me to the bodies
who would hold this information.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Simone,

Our Reference No. is: P0001784

Thank you for your request for information. Before we are able to
respond would you clarify that your request is for information held by
the Government Office for the East of England. I ask because the final
paragraph of your enquiry requests 'Any other information held by the
City Council with regards to the nuclear bunker (for example, evacuation
planning, personnel provisioning, as so on)'.

Cambridge City Council is a completely separate organisation and we are
therefore unable to provide you with information held by them. You
would have to contact them direct for information held by them on this
matter. The link for the Cambridge City Council internet page in order
to e-mail them is below:

http://www.cambridge.gov.uk/ccm/content/...

If I do not hear from you again within 3 months of this request for
clarification I will assume that your enquiry was sent to this office in
error and your request will lapse.

Please quote our reference number above in any future correspondence
regarding this matter.

Kind regards

Dear Sue Dossetter,

Reference No. : P0001784

Apologies, I originally sent this request to Cambridge City
Council, and they advised me to get in touch with your department.
A cut and paste error, I am afraid.

If you could substitute 'Cambridge City Council' with 'Government
Office for the East of England', then all would be well.

If you require me to resubmit the request, do let me know.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Janna,

Thank you for your response. However, it was Cambridge City Council
who passed me on to your department.

(cf:
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/sa...
)

Now, *someone* must know how, when and why the bunker was sold. (I
have tried to get in touch with the property developers, but
haven't heard back from them yet.)

If it isn't your office, nor is it the City Council, would you know
whom I should approach to find out? In the meantime, I shall get
back in touch with the City Council.

I can't believe there is *nothing* on file with anyone about the
disposal of government property.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Simone,

Thank you for your email of today.

As stated within Dawn's letter to you this department does not hold the
information that you have requested. However, it is my understanding,
after speaking with our corporate team, that DEFRA (Department for
Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs) owned and sold this land several
years ago to Countryside Properties (Accordia) Ltd.

I will try and find out tomorrow who, within DEFRA, might hold the
information that you need. I will email you with my findings once I have
found out.

Kind regards
Janna

Dear Simone

I have been trying to get hold of a contact name at DEFRA who might
hold the information that you have requested all morning with no luck! I
have left an urgent message on someone's answer machine, hopefully they
will return my call soon.

It may be that, with your permission, we might choose to forward your
request to DEFRA's FOI contact for them to take forward if we don't hear
from them within the next couple of days.

I will keep you informed of its progression.

Kind regards
Janna
