19 August 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

I wish to make a request under the Freedom of Information act 2000.

Please could you tell me how many fixed location roadside
speed/safety camera boxes there are in the Surrey Police area.

I am aware that live cameras are moved between these locations.
Please could you also tell me how many live cameras are currently
in use? Also please could you give these statistics (locations &
cameras) for 2007, 2006 and 2005.

Yours faithfully,

Tristan Young

Dear Mr Young

Your email to Surrey Police on 19 August was passed to myself for
response. I have recorded this as a Freedom of Information Request
(reference 2631). I repeat your question below followed by my reply.

Question
I wish to make a request under the Freedom of Information act 2000.
Please could you tell me how many fixed location roadside speed/safety
camera boxes there are in the Surrey Police area. I am aware that live
cameras are moved between these locations. Please could you also tell me
how many live cameras are currently in use? Also please could you give
these statistics (locations & cameras) for 2007, 2006 and 2005.

Answer
Camera Housings
I attach a table showing the locations and date of installation of each of
the permanent fixed roadside safety camera housings in the Surrey Safety
Camera Partnership area to the end of 2007. Please note that this excludes
the cameras installed on the M25 that enforce the variable speed limit
because these are managed by the Metropolitan Police, not Surrey Police.
It also excludes any temporary camera housings associated with road works
for example. It is worth noting that upon the creation of the Surrey
Safety Camera Partnership all the existing camera sites were reviewed to
see if enforcement was still warranted, whether the site complied with the
conspicuity and visibility rules, and whether any alternative measures
such as vehicle activated signs may provide a better solution due to the
characteristics of the site. Consequently 8 camera housings were removed.
The locations and further information regarding each permanent camera
housing site (including the reductions in road casualties achieved) is
available via the Surrey Safety Camera Partnership website
www.surrey-safecam.org

Cameras
At the beginning of 2005 the Surrey Police owned and deployed 5 "Gatso"
speed cameras, and two "Gatso" red light violation cameras. Since then, to
the end of 2007, the Surrey Safety Camera Partnership has also purchased
the following cameras:

two "Gatso" red light cameras in May 2005
one "Gatso" speed camera in September 2006

These cameras are moved from housing to housing from time to time to
maintain an effective deterrent at all the camera housing sites. When a
site has not got a "live" camera, then a dummy flash is provided to
maintain the deterrent. Occasionally additional "Gatso" cameras have been
hired for use in temporary road works, or for use while other cameras have
been away for calibration.

Yours sincerely
