Roll of the Peerage
A Freedom of Information request to Ministry of Justice by M Bimmler
The request was partially successful.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I would like to request access to a document which is possibly
called "Roll of the Peerage" and includes all those persons who
have proven their succession to a peerage in the United Kingdom and
are eligible to stand in the by-elections for hereditary seats in
the House of Lords.
It has been reported that this document has been converted into an
electronic file in 2007 and was meant to be included on the website
of the then Department of Constitutional Affairs. Considering that
the Ministry of Justice has now assumed the responsibilities of the
DCA, I suppose that this electronic file is now held and updated by
the MoJ. If not, please advise accordingly where it is held now.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Bimmler

Dear Mr Bimmler,
Thank you for your email of the 29th May. The Roll of the Peerage is a record of the names of all hereditary Peers who have proved succession and all living Life Peers. Some of the hereditary peers included will have also Petitioned the House for the right to vote in Lords by-elections, but not all and a record of all those who have gone on to obtain such right is maintained by the Clerk of the Parliaments, House of Lords, Palace of Westminster, LONDON, SW1A 0PW.
The Roll of the Peerage is maintained by the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice in accordance with the Royal Warrant dated 1st June 2004. The Roll is not at present available in electronic format, although I am hopeful that it will be published on the internet later this year. If you would like to provide me with your postal address I will happily send you a copy of the latest revision.
Yours sincerely,
Grant A. Bavister

Dear Mr Bavister,
many thanks for your response and your offer to send me a printed
revision of the Roll of the Peerage.
However, for the moment I shall be content to wait for its
electronic publication - if you could arrange to send me a brief
note once the Roll of the Peerage is available on the internet,
that would be much appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Bimmler

Dear Mr Bimmler,
Thank you for your email and at present the Roll of the Peerage is no
further forward, in as much as that it is still not ready to appear on
the internet. Those who are checking over its contents and working on
the format told me over the Summer that they are hoping to have
something for me soon, but also warn me that they have a considerable
number of queries. If you would like a hard copy, do let me know and I
will be happy to put one in the post and feel free to mention this again
to me when you wish.
Yours sincerely,
Grant Bavister
