Road verges - ecological protection scheme

Susan Davis made this Freedom of Information request to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council

The request was successful.

From: Susan Davis

7 March 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

If you run an ecological protection scheme for road verges in your
area, please could you provide me with the following details:

a) what protection measures a verge receives when it is included in
the scheme

b) the list of verges covered by the scheme (and their locations -
road name/number and six figure OS grid references would be fine)

c) for each verge, the specific reasons why the verge has been
included in the scheme - i.e. the notable species found there, or
the NVC community present

If you do not run such a scheme in your area, but you are aware
that another body does, please could you refer me to them instead.

Many thanks,

Susan Davis

Re: EI 09 0001
Further to my acknowledgement of your request, I have received some
information from a Principal Planning Officer and am now in a position to
respond. I can confirm we do not hold the information requested as the
Council don't have an ecological protection scheme in the Borough for
roadside verges.

However, I hope the following information is useful. The Council's
Countryside and PROW Section are managing one roadside verge at present
and are considering another verge for the same purpose, adjacent to a long
distance walkway; the opportunities for management of verges for
biodiversity arise on an ad hoc basis and in essence entail replacing
regular close grass cutting with annual cutting after flowering, followed
by raking off.

The Borough is located within the Tees Valley. The Tees Valley Wildlife
Trust is developing a series of Habitat Action Plans (and Species Action
Plans) and these can be viewed on the website
http://www.teesvalleybiodiversity.org.uk...
One of the HAPS being developed is on roadside verges. Each HAP describes
the habitat, discusses status nationally and locally, and sets out targets
and actions needed to secure a healthy future for the habitat.

I hope that this satisfies your request for information. If you are not
satisfied with how your request has been dealt with then you are free to
make a complaint either to the Council or to the Information Commissioner.
You will find details of the complaints procedure on the Council's Website
at
http://www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/YrCou...
(alternatively by using the A-Z Index from the home page). The Information
Commissioner is an independent person who has responsibility for
overseeing the Data Protection Act 1998, the Freedom of Information Act
2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004. More details can
be obtained from the Information Commissioner***s website at
[1]www.ico.gov.uk .

Should you have any queries about this matter please don***t hesitate to
contact me.

Dear Susan,

You have asked for further information on the ecological interest on the
verge managed by the Council. I am responding direct to you in this
respect.

As mentioned previously, the Council is managing one roadside verge at
present; the management strategy was put in place by the Countryside Team,
with on-going management by the Green and Clean team in the Council.

This is a list of species recorded in 2005 on the verge.

Bird’s Foot Trefoil
Black Knapweed
Bush Vetch
Cleavers
Common Bistort
Common Field speedwell
Common Ragwort
Common Vetch
Cow Parsley
Crosswort
Cuckoo Flower
Cut-leaved Cranesbill
Daisy
Dandelion
Hogweed
Lesser Celandine
Meadow Vetchling
Oxeye daisy
Ribwort plantain
Yarrow

I hope this is useful to you.

With regards, Rob Lunan
