Road verges - ecological protection scheme

A Freedom of Information request to Bedford Borough Council by Susan Davis

The request was successful.

Susan Davis

17 April 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

I made an FoI request to Bedfordshire County Council in March, but
I was not able to ascertin whether the authority had been able to
answer it in full before its disbanding. A request to the BCC FoI
mail box for an update directs me to you. Please see my original
request and follow-up query below. If you wish to treat it as a new
FoI request, that's fine. The person dealing with it was Carol
Fuller.

Yours faithfully,

Susan Davis

Original request:

Dear Sir or Madam,

If you run an ecological protection scheme for road verges in your
area, please could you provide me with the following details:

a) what protection measures a verge receives when it is included in
the scheme

b) the list of verges covered by the scheme (and their locations -
road name/number and six figure OS grid references would be fine)

c) for each verge, the specific reasons why the verge has been
included in the scheme - i.e. the notable species found there, or
the NVC community present

If you do not run such a scheme in your area, but you are aware
that another body does, please could you refer me to them instead.

Many thanks,

Susan Davis

Follow-up query:

Dear Carol,

Thank you for your reply. Could you confirm that Bedfordshire
County Council does not hold any information itself which would
help to answer parts (a) and (c) of my request? The reason I ask is
that I'm unsure how you can carry out the management of these
verges if you don't hold any information about how they are to be
managed, and what features they are being managed for, but perhaps
I am missing part of the picture.

Yours sincerely,

Susan Davis

Hello Susan,
There are some 30 pages and I'm afraid that I have neither the time nor
someone to call upon to scan and email it all to you. Is there a
problem with posting it?

Regards

Simon Fisher

Dear Simon,

Thanks for your reply. Could I suggest you speak to the council's
Freedom of Information officer to establish whether you are able to
claim exemption in this case. In my experience of making FoI
requests, scanning 30 pages is usually regarded as a reasonable
request, as it would fall within the standard 18 hour limit.

Yours sincerely,

Susan Davis

Dear Marian,

Thank you very much for this - it is very useful information.

I have just one query - for sites where the special interest is an
individual species, rather than a habitat or vegetation type, the
species name is listed if this is a plant, but if it is an animal,
the name is not given. Do you hold the name of the species in
question? If so, could you let me know what these are?

The sites in question are:

1. Bletsoe - Thurleigh

2. Potton Church

Thanks
