Road verges - ecological protection scheme

A Freedom of Information request to Hackney Borough Council by Susan Davis

The request was successful.

Susan Davis

13 March 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

If you run an ecological protection scheme for road verges in your
area, please could you provide me with the following details:

a) what protection measures a verge receives when it is included in
the scheme

b) the list of verges covered by the scheme (and their locations -
road name/number and six figure OS grid references would be fine)

c) for each verge, the specific reasons why the verge has been
included in the scheme - i.e. the notable species found there, or
the NVC community present

If you do not run such a scheme in your area, but you are aware
that another body does, please could you refer me to them instead.

Many thanks,

Susan Davis

Dear Ms Davis

Thank you for your FOI request. After investigation I have found that
the response that was prepared to you unfortunatley was filed on the wrong
FOI case. Below is the answer that was prepared for you.

Apologies for the delay.

Dear Ms Davis

Thank you for your recent request which has been passed to me for reply.

We do not run an ecological protection scheme for the road verges in the
borough. We manage our slip and verge sites to increase the biodiversity
of an area and these sites do not receive any herbicide treatment.

Our sites are now in an improved state in terms of both maintenance and
biodiversity. The actions taken and the types of plants found in these
sites include seeding of wild flower plots with a spring flowering mix,
bulb planting of natives on grass areas, crocus, snow drops, daffodils and
in some woodland type areas with wood anemone, bluebells and snow drops.
And some sites have had more planting with a native mix under the National
Vegetation Classification NVC - W8 of field maple Corylus avellana,
Dogwood, Quercus robur, Carpinus betulus, blackthorn, hawthorn etc.

These sites are managed as highway verges and, being an urban area are
small in size, the largest being 0.25 hectare.

A list of our 56 slip and verge sites and their locations is attached for
your information.

I hope that this is helpful.
