Road Safety

Mark Charlesworth made this Freedom of Information request to Wakefield City Council

The request was successful.

From: Mark Charlesworth

13 July 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please could you advise me how Wakefield Council is being proactive
in reducing the risk of speeding motorists, and the risk of an
accident on Bradford Road. Wrenthorpe; Wrenthorpe Road, Wrenthorpe;
Duke Of York Street/Coronation Street; and also the serious risk of
the very wide section at the junction of Coronation Street &
Wrenthorpe Road, Wrenthorpe?

Near the park on Wrenthorpe Road the path is very thin and
motorists of all ages, mainly 40+ speed up and down this road and
there is no protection between pedestrian and motor vehicle, even
if at 20mph there is a blow out.

Many motorists speed up and down Bradford Road with little regard
for other road users.

At the junction of Coronation Street & Wrenthorpe Road, pedestrians
put their lives in their hands when crossing. Cars appear out of
nowhere and have very little regard for pedestrians and just turn
in ignoring those on foot.

Yours faithfully,

Mark Charlesworth

Dear Mr Charlesworth,

Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Request for Information

First of all I would like to apologise for the delay in responding to you. I am writing in respect of your recent enquiry for information held by the Authority under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.

Please find the information you requested enclosed.

Speeding - Wrenthorpe.

Although the Council does recognise complaints about speeding, there is nothing which we can do to prevent it, especially on 'A' classified roads, as the Council does not have any enforcement powers. All enforcement including speeding is a matter for the Police to deal with as only they have the necessary powers to prosecute any offender. If you wish to make a complaint about speeding then you will need to ring the Police on 0845 6060606.

In the Wrenthorpe area there has been the introduction of traffic calming, including 'humps' road marking and signing all to inform the motorists of potential hazards and to slow them down. Should they choose to ignore this information and break the law then the only option would be enforcement by the Police.

The footways in this Wrenthorpe are no different to the footways in any other part of the district and the potential hazard motorists over running the footway and striking a pedestrian could happen anywhere, but fortunately is very rare. Pedestrians are always asked to be vigilant when crossing any road and should always find somewhere safe to cross before leaving the footway.

I hope this information is useful.

If you have any queries concerning the information we have sent to you please do not hesitate to contact me on the above number.

Yours sincerely
