Dear Mr Higgins,
Re: Freedom of Information Act 2000
Reference No: 51005
Thank you for your recent request, received in February 2009. We are
pleased to enclose the following information.
i) the number of Council owned or rented homes that are fitted with solar
panels, or passive solar heating technology:
This information is not held.
ii) the number of Council properties other than homes that are fitted with
solar panels or passive solar heating technology:
We have five primary schools with photovoltaic panels, installed with
grant funding from the Government's Low Carbon Building Programme (or the
Major Photovoltaic Demonstration Programme which preceded it). Also,
thermal solar panels and passive solar heating are considered for all new
schools built under the Building Schools for the Future programme or the
Council's school PFI programme. To date solar panels have been included in
the rebuilt Catford and Sedgehill secondary schools.
iii) the percentage of the Council's energy consumption that is derived
from renewable sources, and details of the suppliers with whom the Council
is contracted to provide that energy.
When we tender our electricity contracts we ask for bids for green
electricity. From 2001-2007 we achieved 100% renewable energy across all
our contracts, but in recent years suppliers have not been able to offer
it because of shortages. We have had no option but to buy alternative
types of electricity. The current situation is:
26.7% green - windpower electricity supplied by Scottish and Southern
Energy
38.3% green - good quality CHP (Climate Change Levy exempt) supplied by
Scottish & Southern Energy
35.0% brown - supplied by EDF
We hope you will find this information helpful.
Yours sincerely
