Refurbishment of Signal Box at Lisburn Railway Station
Gavin Bamford made this Freedom of Information request to Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company
The request was successful.
From: Gavin Bamford
27 November 2008
Dear Sir or Madam,
Recently, Lisburn Railway Station was successfully refurbished as
part of a wider plan over the entire NI railway network. This
refurbishment has left Lisburn with excellent and well appointed
facilities.
However, refurbishment of the old signal box on the island platform
(2/3) did not take place and unfortunately looks the worse for
wear.
Please advise why refurbishment of the signal box did not take
place at the same time as the rest of the station facilities?
Also, what plans(if any) are in place to refurbish this important
part of the historic railway infrastructure?
Are there any plans for or have you ever considered utilsing this
building as a small railway museum?
Yours faithfully,
Gavin Bamford

Dear Mr. Bamford,
Further to my earlier e-mail acknowledgements, I am now in a position to
respond in more detail to your request for information.
The recent station works you have observed are part of an upgrade and
refurbishment programme linked to adjustments made for disability
access. The works were aimed at improving facilities for the public and
the old signal box was not considered to be within the scope of this
scheme.
Currently the signal box is used as staff accommodation for our local
Permanent Way squad and we have no immediate plans for altering this
arrangement. I would also advise that we do not currently have any
plans for the redecoration of this box.
I trust the foregoing deals with the various queries which you raised.
If you are not satisfied with this reply you may complain to the
Translink Marketing Executive, who has overall responsibility for
Freedom of Information issues within Translink or the Director of
Corporate Affairs, who has such responsibility within the Northern
Ireland Transport Holding Company.
If we are then unable to resolve any complaint that you may have, you
may refer the matter to the Information Commissioner who will make an
independent judgement. The address of the Information Commissioner is:
Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AT. The address of
the Information Commissioner's Office for Northern Ireland is: 51
Adelaide Street, Belfast, BT2 8FE.
Yours sincerely,
Janice Davidson
